PLCAC To Celebrate 60 Years Of Accomplishments

The Pipe Line Contractors Association of Canada (PLCAC) is busy preparing for its 60th Annual Convention to be held at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC, May 11-15.

Since its founding in 1954 by a small group of contractors and suppliers in Edmonton, Canada, the association has experienced many successes negotiating costs, contracts, labor relations, wages and establishing safety guidelines.

The PLCAC, headquartered in Oakville, ON, serves its members as an advocate for safety, a venue for networking and a voice in labor relations. The association is tasked with negotiating with the four pipeline craft unions – Laborers International Union of North America, the International Union of Operating Engineers, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

There are presently 10 collective agreements administered by the PLCAC that cover the type of work performed by members of the association in Canada. Four are used for construction of mainline transmission systems, four apply to distribution systems, one is used for pipeline investigation and assessment work and one covers field overhaul of equipment.

Over the years the association has grown its membership to include 35 Regular Members, 66 Associate Members and 18 Honorary Members.

Destination Vancouver

Under the direction of the PLCAC board of directors and current three-time president David Johnstone, president of T.W. Johnstone Company Ltd., contractors and suppliers from all over Canada and the United States will gather in Vancouver to network, learn, discuss and plan the future of the association.

Nestled near the Pacific Ocean and renowned for its scenic beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor activities, Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city with all the urban amenities.

The Westin Bayshore in downtown Vancouver has been chosen as the venue for the 2014 PLCAC convention. This unique hotel offers guests the best of both worlds – the activities and cultural events of the city, as well as a relaxing Vancouver resort experience. From the hotel, delegates will enjoy views of the coastline, distant mountains and Stanley Park, plus easy access to a wide variety of things to do in and around Vancouver.

Arriving delegates on Sunday, May 11, are invited to a welcome hospitality reception followed later that evening by the President’s Dinner (by invitation only).

On Monday, May 12, avid golfers and novices alike are invited to join the play at the Furry Creek Golf and Country Club for the PGA Invitational (Pipeliners’ Golf Annual) located in Furry Creek, BC. That night, the conference will kick off with a “Diamonds Are Forever” party where attendees can socialize and meet other members from PLCAC regular and associate member companies.

A three-day agenda planned from May 13-15 is packed with several informative meetings and business sessions featuring informed and interesting speakers. Also planned each day of the conference are guided tours and activities.

For more fun and a chance to mingle with old friends and new, delegates and their guests are invited to the “Splash Bash” at the Vancouver Aquarium on Tuesday, May 13. Home to more than 50,000 animals, it is the largest marine wildlife museum in Canada that offers a unique opportunity to get close to some of the world’s most elusive sea creatures.

What’s more appropriate than a theme night titled “Best of the Sixties” in celebration of the PLCAC’s 60th Anniversary? An endless list of memorable 1960s characters will come alive to welcome attendees on Wednesday’s theme night. The evening promises to be a blast into the past as attendees are invited to dress in their favorite character from the 60s.

The conference will close with the “60th Gala Celebration Reception & Banquet.” All delegates and their guests are invited to the formal event on Thursday evening. The reception will be held in the Westin Bayshore foyer with dinner and entertainment to follow in the ballroom.
