Senate kills Arctic drilling, Keystone amendments

On March 13, Senate Democrats voted to kill a legislative amendment to a transportation bill that would have opened the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling and approved the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. The amendment was defeated in the Senate by a 41-57 vote.

One senator complained that the amendment was so full of controversial items that it was merely put forward to score political points. The 78-page amendment would have required the Interior Department to lease large areas of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to drilling and approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline running from Canada to the Gulf Coast of Texas. There was less than 10 minutes of debate on the proposed measure.
