California desalination plant to be largest in Western Hemisphere

Construction is set to begin on the $922 million Poseidon Carlsbad Desalination Project in San Diego County, CA, that will include an advanced-technology desalination plant and 10 miles of water pipeline.

When complete, the project will be the largest seawater desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere and will produce up to 50 million gallons of drinking water per day and is set to supply approximately 7 percent of the region’s water consumers by 2020. The facility should be completed and operating in 2016.
Building costs for the plant and pipeline — which connects to the Water Authority’s aqueduct in San Marcos — are estimated near $1 billion.
