President Trump Signs Orders to Improve Rural Broadband

President Donald J. Trump has signed an executive order and presidential memorandum designed to enhance internet speeds in rural communities across America.

According to the executive order, agencies must remove barriers to capital investment and providing broadband services to those in rural communities. The presidential memorandum directs the Department of the Interior to create a plan to support rural broadband development and adoption by increasing access to tower facilities and other infrastructure assets.

Traditionally, internet service providers have struggled to provide affordable high-speed internet in rural areas because difficult, expansive terrain makes it costly and challenging to install fiber-optic cables.

The orders were based on recommendations made by the federal Interagency Task Force on Agriculture and Rural Prosperity, led by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.
