First Look:Barbco Adds Large Rig To HDD Equipment Line-Up

Jeff Griffin, Senior Editor

Barbco has introduced the first “maxi” rig to its line of horizontal directional drilling equipment.

The 500,000 pound thrust and pullback BD 500 TK was unveiled at Barbco’s East Canton, OH, headquarters in a special event on Nov. 5. At the ceremony, the first unit of the new model was turned over to the contracting company that purchased it, Joe K. Pittman & Co., Moselle, MS.

“What sets the BD 500 TK apart from other equipment in its size class is that it is track mounted,” said Kenny Clever, Barbco general manager and vice president of sales. “Typically, large HDD equipment is mounted on trailers which are towed into the setup location on a job site. The BD 500 TK is self propelled and can be unloaded and moved around the job site like smaller machines.”

Clever said from information available, the new machine is the largest track mounted drill rig currently available.

“Maxi rigs on tracks have been offered before,” said Clever, “but we can find no other track model currently being marketed.”

Equipment details

In addition to 500,000 pounds thrust and pullback, the machine has a rotary gear box with 18,000 foot pounds of torque at 0 to 90 rpm, and 63,000 foot pounds of torque at 0 to 35 rpm.

It is powered by an on board Caterpillar C 18 700 horsepower diesel engine. It has a four drive rack and pinion carriage drive providing carriage speeds to 100 feet per minute, full length thrust frame traveling breakout wrenches, 3 inch fluid swivel with floating spindle, 400 gallon fuel capacity and a 300 gallon hydraulic reservoir. A tow behind, heated and air conditioned driller’s cabin is standard with on board cabin available as an option. Machines with that option can be driven from the cab. It is wireline ready with side entry sub. Angle of approach is from 10 to 18 degrees.

Clever said the new machine is well suited for pipeline work and any type project where long segments of large diameter products must be installed. The first machine’s owner, Pittman Construction, specializes in utility and pipeline construction and is using the new machine on a pipeline project near Yazoo City, MS.

Barbco was established in 1989. In addition to HDD equipment, the company manufactures boring machines, tunneling machines, augers and related products for underground construction applications. With the addition of the BD 500 TK, Barbco currently offers HDD models ranging in size from 50,000 to 500,000 pounds pullback.
