ASCE Meeting Attendees Tour Hobas Plant

The Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) held its 2009 fall meeting at the Hobas Pipe USA factory in The Woodlands, TX. Invited members toured the plant for an opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn how centrifugally cast, fiberglass reinforced, polymer mortar (CCFRPM) pipe is manufactured and used.

The two-hour tour provided engineers and owners, who are members of ASCE Texas Section chapter, the opportunity to attend an educational classroom session conducted by Rick Turkopp, P.E., vice president of engineering. The session included a production tour, quality control testing and discussion. Attendees also were educated on the use and applications of CCFRPM and how the product can serve the ever-growing problems faced with the rehabilitation of ageing sanitary sewer systems and/or new construction. CCFRPM pipe is manufactured in sizes from 18 to 110 inches in pressure and non-pressure classes.

Particular emphasis was placed on raw materials, pipe manufacturing, fittings, manholes and structures as well as ASTM testing of pipe and joints.

Upon completion of the seminar and plant tour, participants were awarded certificates attesting to their “Professional Development Hours” that are required for continuing education in their field. 800.856.7473, www.hobaspipe.com
