HDD Advisor Matches Rigs To Tooling

Jeff Griffin, Senior Editor

The new Ditch Witch HDD Advisor is an intuitive, web-based tool to help select the best downhole tool options to match the drill unit being used plus job site soil conditions – key elements in successfully completing any horizontal directional drilling (HDD) installation.

The interactive HDD Advisor is now live at www.hddadvisor.com. The tool can be used with both Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment.

HDD Advisor is unique to the industry, said Jaime Wines, director of parts sales and marketing.

“There are many websites in the industry that provide information about available drill pipe and tooling options,” Wines said. “But the Ditch Witch HDD Advisor is the only tool available that builds a drill string configuration, based off thread compatibility, and saves it for future reference.”

The first step in using HDD Advisor, is selecting the Ditch Witch or Vermeer drill model and compatible drill pipe. Once the drill model and pipe options are selected, clicking “submit” displays the tooling options available. Starting with the saver sub or SaverLok, a drill string is assembled by selecting components from available options. As selections are made, HDD Advisor recognizes threads for compatible parts and automatically adds other components required by the tool options chosen. The user can pull up detailed information and photos for each tool to help make the right selection. When the drill string is complete, it can be saved for sharing and future reference.

Prep

HDD Advisor can be used to select drill string components before a crew leaves for the job, ensuring all necessary tooling will be on site.

“Also,” Wines said, “HDD Advisor can be accessed from the field via smart phone or tablet, and saved drill string files can be viewed by the dealership, allowing simplified ordering of replacement parts. Saved drill string configurations can be printed or emailed.”

In addition to HDD equipment ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 pounds pullback, Ditch Witch offers drill pipe, downhole tools and fluid systems. The company also offers a complete line of trenchers, vibratory plows, compact utility equipment, vacuum excavators and other related products.
